Band Profile
Band Info
The Rae Brothers New Orleans Jazz Band During the 1970’s Mac and Dave Rae played in the rhythm section of the ‘Onward New Orleans Jazz Band’ which was based in the North East of England and featured a very young Colin ‘Kid’ Dawson on trumpet. With this band they gained invaluable experience working with the touring musicians from New Orleans such as Theodore ‘Teddy’ Riley, George ‘Kid
Sheik’ Cola, Alton Purnell, Teddy Johnson, Sam Lee. Freddy Kholman as well as Benny Waters, Ken Colyer, Sammy Rimington and a host of others. The Rae Brothers New Orleans Jazz Band was formed in 1995. With Dave Rae playing banjo, Mac switching from drums to clarinet, (the instrument he played during the fifties), with Ian Brown on cornet and later Clem Avery on trumpet, they set out to capture the sound and feeling described by Ken Colyer as the “New Orleans Bounce”, a style made famous by the musicians who lived and worked in and around New Orleans Louisiana. In 2008 Clem Avery sadly passed away and it was not until the spring of 2009 a new line up was formed this time with Mac Rae switching once again, this time from clarinet to cornet (the instrument he played in his ‘Revival Band’ in the 80’s), Liz and Paul Bacon, who both played in ‘The Mississippi Dreamboats’ with Liz on clarinet and husband Paul on drums. The band is frequently joined by Ian Wynne on piano (Ian is currently studying music at Birmingham Conservatoire). The band is complete with Jim Blenkin on trombone.
